MENON: Dialogen in het Europese onderwijs

De waarde van dialogen voor onze samenleving is reeds lang erkend. Een goede dialoog is een voorwaarde voor persoonlijke en professionele ontwikkeling, voor de aansturing van democratische processen en voor interculturele uitwisseling. Toch is het aanleren van vaardigheden om de kwaliteit van dialogen te bevorderen nog geen gemeengoed in het Europese onderwijs. Daarin komt verandering. MENON komt er aan!

In september 2005 honoreerde het Europees Platform de aanvraag voor het driejarig Comenius-project MENON. Eind November kwamen experts van elf Europese universiteiten en hogescholen in Malta bijeen voor de aftrap van dit project. Zij bundelen hun krachten om samen een onderwijsprogramma te ontwikkelen waarin de dialoog centraal staat. Hogeschool INHOLLAND Alkmaar participeert hierin via het Centrum voor Kinderfilosofie.

Overige deelnemende landen zijn Malta, Engeland, Portugal, Letland, Spanje, Turkije, Finland, Oostenrijk, Hongarije en Noorwegen. Zij werken de komende jaren aan een compleet programma waarin de dialoog in filosofische onderzoeksgesprekken centraal staat. De Socratische manier van bevragen en onderzoek is hiervoor inspiratiebron.

MENON richt zich op zowel leraren als op initiële opleidingen. Er wordt een module ontwikkeld met een handboek voor (pabo)docenten inclusief een interactieve DVD. Deze DVD bevat video-opnamen met ‘best practice’ voorbeelden uit alle deelnemende landen, voorzien van inhoudelijke reacties en voorzien van cursusopdrachten. In een reader wordt een overzicht geschetst van de theoretische en historische achtergrond van dialogen en de impact hiervan op mens, maatschappij en onderwijs. Een internetplatform, een aanbod aan follow-up workshops per land en internationale workshops door specialisten staan borg voor een continuering van het programma op termijn.

1990 – 2004: STICHTING SOPHIA

Stichting Sophia ontwaakt!

In het begin van de jaren ’90 werd de Stichting Sophia, European foundation for the advancement of doing philosophy with children in het leven geroepen.
Sophia werd opgericht met het doel subsidies te verwerven voor de ontwikkeling van Europese projecten op het terrein van de kinderfilosofie. In 1996 werd een conferentie in Glasgow georganiseerd, nadien leidde de stichting een slapend leven. In de afgelopen tijd is er een nieuw bestuur gevormd en zijn er actieve plannen voor de aanvraag van een Europees project op het gebied van kinderfilosofie, waaraan minstens drie Europese landen deel gaan nemen. In November is in Oxford een eerste voorbereidende bijeenkomst waar beslist zal worden of het Centrum voor Kinderfilosofie hierin gaat participeren.

The International Council of Philosophical Inquiry with Children

Statement by ICPIC executive committee concerning its forthcoming conference in Israel, June 4-8th 2007.

Members of the worldwide P4C (Philosophy for Children) community, and others, will be aware that the 13th ICPIC conference is to be held next June in Israel.

At present, opposing parties in the Middle East are using force and violence to solve their conflict, causing suffering among the civilian populations, many children included. Although we do not presume to have any specific solution for that very complex conflict, the committee believes that the central practice of P4C – critical, creative, caring and collaborative thinking in a community of inquiry – is precisely what is needed to minimize the impulse towards violence in the Middle-East and elsewhere. The conference will be demonstrating the success of philosophical inquiry in education in many countries. But it will also be raising awareness of the urgent challenge to enable children everywhere to grow up in a climate of reasonable dialogue rather than violent conflict.

Children live in a world with an imposing past, which is not of their making, and a challenging future, for which they will need to assume responsibility. P4C encourages children – indeed, all humans - to respond to their world with reason, optimism, respect and care toward others.

These beliefs and hopes are signalled in the title of next year’s ICPIC conference – “Philosophical Inquiry with Children: A meeting point between cultures and identities” - and in its rationale.

Citizenship

Religion, Reason and Spirituality

Each of these is relevant to the education of children – and adults - in a world increasingly aware of the fragility of interpersonal and international relations.

The conference will be hosted by the Melton Centre for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The Hebrew University, appropriately, serves all sectors of Israeli society – Israeli Jewish, Israeli Palestinian, Arab, Druze and Bedouin Students.

Previous ICPIC conferences have succeeded in bringing together educators and young people from all continents and many differing cultures. This next conference could show even more clearly the positive pathway P4C has to offer in a divided world.
